Window Cleaning FAQ
Common questions about hiring window cleaners in California.
Pricing
How much does residential window cleaning cost in California?
Most California window cleaning companies charge $150–$350 for a standard single-story home and $250–$500 for a two-story home. Factors include the number of windows, whether interior cleaning is included, screen cleaning, hard-water stain removal, and access difficulty.
How much does commercial window cleaning cost?
Commercial pricing varies widely — from $0.50–$3 per pane for low-rise retail storefronts to several thousand dollars for high-rise buildings that require rope access or scaffolding. Most commercial cleaners charge by the pane, the hour, or the square foot of glass.
Are window cleaning estimates typically free?
Yes. The vast majority of California window cleaning companies offer free estimates, either over the phone or on-site. On-site estimates are more accurate for large homes or complex access situations. Use the "Free Estimates" filter on city pages to find companies that explicitly offer them.
What factors drive up the price of a window cleaning job?
Higher prices are driven by: interior + exterior service (vs. exterior only), number of panes, building height requiring ladders or rope access, hard water stain removal (a separate service), screen cleaning, track cleaning, and post-construction cleaning which involves removing paint or adhesive.
How Often
How often should I have my windows professionally cleaned?
For most California homes, twice a year is the standard recommendation — typically spring and fall. Coastal homes (Orange County, Marin, Santa Cruz) benefit from quarterly cleaning due to salt spray and marine layer. Homes near wildfires or dusty agricultural areas may need service three or four times per year.
How often should commercial properties have windows cleaned?
Retail storefronts and restaurants typically need cleaning monthly or quarterly for a good first impression. Office buildings usually schedule quarterly. Medical facilities and restaurants often clean more frequently.
What time of year is best for window cleaning in California?
Spring (after pollen season peaks) and fall (before winter rains deposit debris) are ideal. In Southern California, late fall through early winter works well. Avoid scheduling during Santa Ana wind events, which deposit dust immediately after cleaning.
Hiring & Safety
Should I check if a window cleaner is insured?
Always. Ask for proof of general liability insurance before the job begins. A reputable company will have no hesitation providing a certificate. This protects you if a cleaner falls on your property or accidentally breaks a window.
Do window cleaners need to be licensed in California?
California does not have a specific window cleaning license. However, companies doing work over $500 in total labor and materials are technically required to hold a California Contractor's License (Class C-61/D-16 Window Coverings, or relevant). In practice, many residential cleaners operate without it. Checking insurance is the more reliable safeguard.
How do I verify a window cleaning company is legitimate?
Check their Google Business Profile for a verified address and real reviews. Look for a working website and phone number. Ask how long they've been in business and whether they carry liability insurance. All listings on SparklingPanes have a minimum of 5 reviews and a 3.5-star rating.
Can I trust a company with only a few reviews?
Review counts matter. A 5-star company with 4 reviews is less reliable than one with 4.5 stars and 80 reviews. SparklingPanes requires a minimum of 5 reviews for inclusion, but we recommend prioritizing companies with 20+ reviews when possible.
Services
What is the difference between interior and exterior window cleaning?
Exterior cleaning removes outdoor dirt, pollen, bird droppings, and water spots from the outside of the glass. Interior cleaning removes fingerprints, dust, and smudges from the inside. Most homeowners get both done at the same time. Some companies price these separately.
Do window cleaners also clean window screens?
Many do, but screen cleaning is often an add-on service billed separately. When requesting a quote, ask whether screen removal, cleaning, and reinstallation is included in the base price.
Can window cleaners remove hard water stains?
Yes, most professional companies offer hard water stain or calcium deposit removal. It's typically priced separately because it requires chemicals and additional labor. Mineral deposits from sprinklers or coastal salt spray are a common issue in California.
Do window cleaners clean solar panels?
Some do. Solar panel cleaning is a growing add-on service. Dirty panels can reduce electricity output by 10–30%. Search for the "Solar Panels" service tag on city pages to find companies that offer this.
What is gutter cleaning and do window cleaners do it?
Gutter cleaning removes leaves, debris, and blockages from your roof gutters. Many window cleaning companies bundle it because they're already working at height with ladders. Look for the "Gutter Cleaning" tag on listings.
